Diabetes Management for the Older Adult

AMDA has created a training program and tool kit for ALC staff as well as family caregivers to help them care for older adults with diabetes. Our goal is to keep these older persons with diabetes in the most independent living environment possible. Following the recommendations and using the tools in this kit, can provide both a high quality living situation, as well as a safe environment for the older adult with diabetes.

Diabetes is a common condition among older adults. It is estimated that almost 30 percent of persons living in assisted living communities (ALC) have diabetes. If  diabetes is not carefully managed and monitored, complications may occur that often lead to hospitalization. When individuals are unable to manage their diabetes care and insulin regimen care by themselves and/or by the staff in ALCs, they are transferred to a skilled nursing facility.
