When Is a Survey Not a Survey?

In a 2024 regulation that is well-known in the post-acute and long-term care community, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services highlighted the indispensable role of registered nurses (RN) in skilled nursing facilities (Fed Regist 2024;89[92]:40876-41000, https://bit.ly/LTCstaffing). This regulation mandates that RNs must be on-site 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Additionally, RNs are mandated to provide care for 0.55 hours per resident per day.
