An Unfamiliar Itch: An Atypical Scabies Presentation in Long-Term Care

Scabies outbreaks in long-term care (LTC) facilities can be difficult to recognize and manage. Scabies typically involves intense itching and papular burrows located on the web spaces of fingers and toes, ankles, wrists, or buttocks. However, older adults may exhibit atypical presentations. This case report describes a prolonged Scabies outbreak in a nursing home characterized by atypical presentations, delayed diagnosis, and challenges with environmental disinfection and interfacility communication.
