As providers in post-acute and long-term care, we have the privilege of working with residents as they transition from an illness or injury back to their new functional baseline. As the prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) in aging populations increases, it is an unfortunate reality that providers will encounter residents struggling with addiction — and all will have varied experiences when it comes to obtaining sobriety. Reasonable care is the fruit of a good assessment, and a thorough knowledge of the resident’s history of substance use is mandatory for good care.
