Among 1.4 million residents living in 15,600 US nursing homes (NHs),1 the median survival time of US NH residents is 2.2 years.2 Care at the end of life (EOL), encompassing the last 90 days of life, therefore, is a critical component of care for NH residents.3 EOL care may include palliative care services, which focus on minimizing aggressive treatments and supporting quality of life of patients with serious and life-limiting conditions.3-5 Although palliative care in US NHs has been shown to lower hospitalizations and provide symptom relief, only 4% of residents receive these services due to less availability of its specialists.
