Response to the Letter to the Editor

We totally agree with colleague Lynn that, as she states: “the ‘no surprise’ question was developed to identify persons who were sufficiently sick or disabled that their care team should certainly know about their preferences about treatment and goals, and their living situation—in short, their advance care planning,” and not to predict mortality exactly within 1 year. However, despite the aforementioned, we were still interested in the predictive validity of the Surprise Question (SQ) for mortality within 1 year because this is an important criterion to specifically focus on advance care planning, as these patients are in the last phase of their lives.
