Seven million people live with dementia (PLWD) in the United States, which will reach 12 million by 2040.1 One in 5 older adults with dementia is hospitalized each year; one-third experience multiple hospitalizations.2 Thirty percent of older adults develop a new activity of daily living disability while hospitalized; this risk could be mitigated by rehabilitation.3 Although evidence supports the benefits of activity in PLWD, they are not seen as “good” rehabilitation candidates because of dementia-related stigma.
