Reexamining Person-Centered Care Frameworks in Long-Term Care: A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Core Elements and Implementation Challenges

There is growing global recognition of the need for person-centered care to ensure high-quality health care.1 Person-centered care (PCC) for older adults has been associated with a wide range of positive outcomes. However, the dominant frameworks were developed in Western high-income countries and may not reflect cultural diversity in beliefs about autonomy, family roles, and provider authority. Implementation of PCC in residential long-term care (LTC) homes requires consideration of different elements, including older adult needs, preferences, and beliefs; their communities, family structures, and values; LTC organizational practices, such as leadership and decision making; and the wider social community.
