Working in a nursing home can be stressful, and can result in compassion fatigue as staff encounter multiple demands, expectations, and requests by residents, patients, families and management. Risk factors of compassion fatigue include irritability with self or others, chronic lateness, exhaustion, low self-esteem, and even hopelessness. People suffering from compassion fatigue may feel overburdened by emotions and a desire to escape from work, while at the same time feeling isolated and finding it difficult to remain flexible on the job.
