The Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) Pipeline—Obstacles and Opportunities

As the baby boomers retire, the number of older Americans who require long-term services and support in an assisted living or nursing home (NH) is expected to increase.1,2 Although much of the national attention has focused on the current and future shortage of direct care staff in these settings,3,4 there is also a shortage of a robust pipeline of experienced, qualified, licensed nursing home administrators (NHAs). All NHs and a growing number of assisted living facilities are required to have a licensed NHA.
