The built environment is a key determinant of successful aging.1 One essential feature is neighborhood walkability, which is a measure of street connectivity and access to amenities within walking distance.2 Living in highly walkable neighborhoods is associated with substantial physical and mental health benefits, but few studies have considered the neighborhoods inhabited by older adults despite their progressive urbanization.3,4 Retirement homes (also known as residential care or assisted living facilities) are an increasingly common housing option for older adults who require some supportive care and services but wish to maintain independence in the community.
