It Is Time to Revamp Approaches to Managing Dysphagia in Nursing Homes

Practices and knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia vary widely. Over time, some current beliefs and approaches have been questioned, for example, the limited evidence of the efficacy of some interventions, inadequate medical assessments of the symptom, and unnecessarily stringent diet restrictions. Some staff and practitioners recognize these concerns and the supporting evidence; they strive to identify and address underlying causes of swallowing issues and minimize diet modifications and restrictions on intake.
