Impact of Preoperative Muscle Strength on Walking Independence After Total Hip Arthroplasty

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) reduces pain and improves physical function1; however, walking independence after surgery is often delayed. Several factors have been reported as reasons for delayed physical function recovery2–4; nevertheless, few reports have focused on muscle strength. Many patients who require THA are older, and they experience muscle weakness due to pain-related decreased physical activity.
