Experiences of Care Aides Caring for Residents With a History of Psychological Trauma in Long-Term Care Homes (Nursing Homes)—Early Findings

Recent data from Canadian long-term care (LTC) homes report that 60.8% of residents live with dementia and 65.9% experience moderate to severe cognitive impairment.1 LTC admission can be traumatic for older adults,2 particularly those with dementia and preexisting psychological trauma or posttraumatic stress-related disorders (PTSD).3 More than three-quarters of Canadians have experienced events significant enough to cause persistent trauma-related symptoms, with the lifetime prevalence of PTSD estimated at 9.2%.
