Caring for the Ages
In post-acute and long-term care settings, everyone plays a role in infection prevention and control. Especially for frontline staff, doing this well can feel challenging. Nurses, nurse assistants, and environment service staff must be familiar with cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces to reduce the risk of spreading pathogens. This includes knowing which products to apply and for how long. They must also be vigilant about hand hygiene, which may require cleaning their hands up to 100 times per shift (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Clinical Safety: Hand Hygiene for Healthcare Workers,” https://www.cdc.gov/clean-hands/hcp/clinical-safety/index.html).
