The Changing Face of COVID-19 (2020-2025) at a Nursing Home
This study was based on a newly developed COVID-19 performance improvement bundle, resulting in a marked infection fatality rate (IFR) decrease at Coler Rehabilitation & Nursing Care Center in New York City (NYC) from 24.4% in March 2020 to 0% by June 2020. It is also an extension to a 2022 research study to determine if elevating the standard of care equally for all residents could help eliminate disparities in COVID-19 outcomes for racial-ethnic minorities. Based on the experience gained from the 2020 outbreak, the aim of this study is to show that residents subsequently infected would experience less severe infections, due to: (1) partial immunity from prior infections; (2) vaccination of a high percentage of residents; (3) earlier viral detection and isolation; (4) adherence to best Infection Prevention & Control practices; (5) improved therapeutics; and (6) effective use of monitoring data collected via our Quality Assurance Performance Improvement process.
