In 2022 the I-40 Hernando DeSoto bridge spanning the Mississippi River was closed to traffic for months after a massive crack was discovered in the structure — a stark reminder that infrastructure needs regular attention and updates. This is true for our nation’s roads and bridges but also for our post-acute and long-term care facilities. “At least in most states, many of these buildings are decades old and built in a different time,” said Karl Steinberg, MD, CMD, a California-based long-term care physician and host of the PALTtalk with Caring podcast.
