Hospitalized older patients are increasingly complex and often require procedures after discharge that lead to burdensome transitions of care. Post-acute care providers practicing in the skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting have often received little if any training in these common procedures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a post-acute care procedures course that uses simulation-based mastery learning to teach gastrostomy tube removal and replacement, tracheostomy tube replacement, knee joint aspiration and injection, and basic suturing.
