Addressing Access and Inclusion for LGBTQ+ Older Adults in Long-Term Care Communities and Older Adult Housing

There are more than 20 million Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning (LGBTQ+). For many, the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 marks the start of the modern LGBTQ+ equality movement; in fact, numerous signs of LGBTQ+ activism emerged throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The (mostly) young people who sparked this movement for equality and human rights, which built momentum in the 1970s and later decades, are now older adults. Their growing presence and visibility is creating new demands—and new opportunities—for the geriatric care sector.
