Pain is a common and disabling condition in older adults and is associated with numerous adverse effects, such as functional or cognitive impairment, malnutrition, or depression.1 Although pain usually has negative effects leading to prolonged hospital stays in older adults, limited evidence exists about the occurrence and development of pain in acute settings.2
