The practice of geriatric medicine is an integral component of residency training in internal medicine. In fact, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in Internal Medicine specifies that training programs should have a dedicated geriatric education coordinator, and residents should have an assignment in geriatrics with sufficient clinical exposure. Such an assignment exposes residents to clinical experience in both outpatient geriatric clinics and assisted nursing facilities.
