The term “rehabilitation” comes from the Latin words “Re,” which means to restore, and “habilis,” which means suitable or fit. Rehabilitation is therefore the restoring of the individual to a suitable state and helping them achieve their highest level of function and quality of life. Rehabilitation is not a new concept, having started in ancient Egypt, where rehabilitation was initiated for soldiers and those who sustained acute events such as a stroke. Treatment generally involved physical movement.
