Despite federal regulations that set the standards of care and safety in about 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, evidence of common mistreatment (eg, abuse and neglect) of individuals living in these care settings is well documented.1,2 For example, a meta-analysis3 has shown that more than half of staff members admitted to committing acts of mistreatment, including psychological abuse (33%), physical abuse (14%), neglect (12%), and sexual abuse (2%).
