Caring for the Ages
The renowned American poet Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This quote has served as my guiding principle since I became a social worker in 2005. I vividly remember my first day on the job when I met a long-term care resident affectionately known as Carie. She had been at the facility for about two years, and during that time her family had rarely visited her. As a result, she isolated herself in her room, reluctant to engage with anyone.
