Today more than ever it is important for us in geriatrics to encourage immunizations for our residents and patients across all areas of post-acute and long-term care. Since 1974, vaccinations against 14 preventable illnesses have led to 154 million deaths being averted (Lancet 2024;403:2307–2316). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the 2023–2024 flu season, influenza vaccination in the -United States prevented about 5.3 million symptomatic influenza-related illnesses, close to 100,000 hospitalizations due to influenza, and 7,639 deaths (Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2025;74:96–101).
