As a veteran medical director whose early positions predated the post-acute care era, I can say that these new “profit” centers have been a nice change from the traditional longitudinal care of long-term residents. The patients are often hardier and actively engaged in life; mostly they need curated rehabilitation efforts to get them back on their feet. This resembles the old long stays in community hospitals, which the diagnosis-related groups eliminated.
