One area that shows promise for artificial intelligence (AI) is its application to infectious disease. Interestingly, the first attempt to incorporate AI into infectious disease management came as early as 1976 with the creation of MYCIN, an “expert system” designed to recommend antimicrobial therapy in severe bacterial infections, although it never became operational (Clin Microbiol Infect 2020;26:584–595). Since then there have been a variety of computer-assisted tools to identify, track, treat, and manage infectious diseases.
