My Experience With Multigenerational Living

Caring for the Ages
A much-cited report from Pew Research Center from March 2022 details the recent rapid growth in the United States of multigenerational households — about four times what they were in 1970. The number of people living in multigenerational homes has also more than quadrupled in that time, to some 60 million in March 2021 — 18% of the population (D. Cohn et al., “Financial Issues Top the List of Reasons U.S. Adults Live in Multigenerational Homes,” March 24, 2022, https://bit.ly/3yz5tYt). These findings echo a report from Generations United that also found that 26% — more than one in four Americans — now live in a household with three or more generations (“Fact Sheet: Multigenerational Households,” 2021, https://bit.ly/3wUvBgc).
