Prior to the mid-20th century, there were no effective biological approaches available to help manage psychiatric disorders. Since that time, psychiatry has shifted course and psychotropic medication use in the United States and elsewhere has proliferated. Over the past half century, the number of older adults—including frail, cognitively impaired, and behaviorally challenged individuals—has grown significantly and the number and variety of medications used in health care has expanded dramatically.
