David LeVine, MD, CMD, Named 2016 Medical Director of the Year

Columbia, MD – David LeVine, MD, CMD, Medical Director of Menorah Manor in St. Petersburg, FL, is The Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine’s 2016 Medical Director of the Year. He accepted the honor at a General Session during the Society’s 2016 Annual Conference in March, with his wife, children, parents, and in-laws in the audience, as well as members of his Menorah Manor ‘family.’

“I love what I do,” said Dr. LeVine. He noted that he was considered a “black sheep” in a family where his father and two brothers were surgeons, but that he has never regretted his career choice. Acknowledging that his patients often don’t get better, he is honored to provide the best possible care and quality of life for patients in this most vulnerable phase of their lives.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. LeVine developed and supervises a clinical credentialing process and cultivated a large private medical staff. He is active in medical staff recruitment, oversight, education, and retention—including developing relationships with specialists such as psychiatrists and dentists. He leads a team of geriatric professionals that provides comprehensive outpatient assessments of individuals experiencing memory and/or behavioral changes. He provides staff education on topics such as dementia, end-of-life issues, palliative care, and ethics. He is clinical preceptor for the Menorah Manor geriatric rotation and conducts individual staff coaching, and has been known to entertain residents and staff with song and dance.

Dr. LeVine’s parents, still living independently, were there as Dr. LeVine thanked them for their support and love. He recalled, “Before HIPAA, I sometimes went on rounds with my father. I saw the pride he took in his work, his compassion for his patients, and how he remained humble despite the many accolades given to him.”

AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine has been key to his accomplishments, Dr. LeVine noted. He observed that he was a fairly novice practitioner when he first became a medical director, and tools such as the Core Curriculum on Medical Direction program and clinical practice guidelines “helped me to understand what it means to be a quality medical director and team leader.”

The Medical Director of the Year award, established in 2007, recognizes medical directors who set an outstanding example of what the physician leader in post-acute/long term care can accomplish with knowledge, experience, passion, and teamwork, as well as the ability to multi-task, stay on top of clinical and quality improvement innovations, and lead facilities in providing quality care.
