A 76-year-old male patient, who was wheelchair bound due to cervical stenosis but not terminally ill, wanted to stop eating and drinking to hasten his death. The attending doctor, who provided care according to the medical literature, was disheartened when the medical examiner listed “suicide” as the cause of death on the death certificate.
