BPCI Advanced—Now Available: Model Extension Request for Applications (RFA)

February 24, 2023
Policy Snapshot

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is now accepting applications from Medicare-enrolled providers, suppliers, and Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) to participate in the forthcoming two-year extension of the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) Advanced Model.

The BPCI Advanced Model launched in 2018 and was originally set to end on December 31, 2023. The BPCI Advanced Model tests whether linking payments for an episode of care will encourage health-care providers to make changes to improve care coordination and reduce expenditures while maintaining or improving the quality of care for patients. Review the Model Overview Fact Sheet- Model Year 6 and watch a short Model Overview animated video for more information.

This extension allows for additional testing throughout 2024 and 2025, with the model ending on December 31, 2025. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 5:00 PM ET. The Request for Applications (RFA) for Model Year 7 (2024) and supporting materials can be found on the BPCI Advanced Applicant Resources webpage.

The BPCI Advanced Model’s extension will incorporate and test model design improvements to help inform future bundled payment models. Changes being made as part of this extension include:

  • Adjustments to the payment methodology to achieve a balance between Medicare savings and preserving incentives for model participation.
  • Requiring new Convener Participants to be Medicare providers or suppliers, or Medicare Accountable Care Organizations.
  • Additional technical assistance to help new and returning participants understand the data and requirements of the model.

CMS will host a virtual webinar on March 9, 2023, at 2:00 PM ET to provide a general overview of the BPCI Advanced Model and the new application opportunity for the two-year extension. Register now.
