Stopping eating and drinking by advance directives (SED by AD) is a complex issue that requires careful consideration of all ethical principles.1 AMDA encourages all practitioners to carefully consider and evaluate each request for SED by AD individually in the context of clinical and biopsychosocial factors, within the ecosystem of facility, local, state, and federal policy.
