One fifth of Medicare patients discharged from a hospital are readmitted within 30 days. Roughly 75% of patients with a hip fracture and 20% of patients without a hip fracture are transferred to a nursing facility (NF) after hospitalization.1 Discharge to a NF has been associated with higher odds of postdischarge complications and reoperations in the general adult population, with the average length of stay in a NF for all Medicare patients being 24 days (Supplementary Fig. 1).2–4 The aim of this study is to determine if discharge disposition after hospital admissions for a hip fracture is associated with readmission rates, time to readmission, and reason for readmission compared with other causes of hospital admissions.
