Quality Improvement Awards Recognize Innovative Projects
Efforts to improve quality of life, prevent falls, and improve collaboration between the hospital and the skilled nursing facility (SNF) were recognized with Quality Improvement (QI) awards during AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care (PALTC) Medicine’s annual conference.
The QI awards program, administered by the Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, an affiliate of AMDA, recognizes outstanding projects through two awards: the QI Award and the Quality Improvement and Health Outcomes (QIHO) Award.
The QI Award honors a program designed to encourage the development of innovative projects that have a demonstrable impact on the quality of PALTC. The 2019 award went to Marissa C. Galicia-Castillo, MD, MSEd, CMD, professor at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, for “Collaboration Between a Skilled Nursing Facility and a Heart Hospital: Preventing Heart Failure Readmissions to the Acute Care Hospital”.
The QIHO Awards recognize facilities that have new programs, implemented by medical directors and their care teams, that result in improvement in residents’ quality of care and quality of life. There were two QIHO recipients for 2019:
- The Residence at Timber Pines, Spring Hills, FL, for “Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle: Resident-Centered Care for an Assisted Living Memory Care Neighborhood”
- Hillside Health & Rehabilitation, Missoula, MT, for “Taking a Proactive Approach to Fall Prevention”
James Lett, MD, CMDR, 2019 Foundation Chair, observed, “The best research is done by those in the trenches doing the work every day. They understand the questions and can best determine if the answers are useful and functional in the real world. At the same time, federal regulations require nursing homes to have Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement committees, formulations, and projects, and the QI awards fit in perfectly with this.”
