JAMDA, the monthly journal of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, won the 2018 Gold Mather LifeWays Innovative Research on Aging Award for an article—Sex Differences in the Circumstances Leading to Falls: Evidence From Real-Life Falls Captured on Video in Long-Term Care—that appeared in the February 2018 issue. The award is given to the paper that is felt to have the greatest potential to improve aging services.

The researchers (Yijian Yang, MD, PhD; Kimberley S. van Schooten, PhD; Joanie Sims-Gould, PhD; Fabio Feldman, PhD; and Stephen N. Robinovitch, PhD) examined video recordings from the common areas of two long-term care communities over a nine-year period. The fallers included 298 female residents and 231 male residents with an average age of 83.

The researchers examined the cause of the fall, how it was influenced by the type of activity being engaged in, and whether gender played a role. The most common activity was walking and was more likely to occur in women (40.3%) than men (29.2%). Other activities included standing and sitting down/lowering. Based on the results, the researchers recommended offering customized exercise programs based on gender and promoting safer wheelchair transfers.

“The fact that a JAMDA publication won this award—which recognizes applied research with important implications for the care of older adults—underscores that the work published in JAMDA is of the highest quality and of relevance to post-acute and long-term care, and gaining the attention of provider organizations,” says Editors-in-Chief Philip Sloane, MD, MPH, and Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD. “The work by Dr. Yang and colleagues is especially interesting in light of their methods of understanding the cause of falls, and of importance given their findings of how the cause of falls differ by gender.

A second article, Use of a Robotic Seal as a Therapeutic Tool to Improve Dementia Symptoms: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial, from the September 2017 issue was a runner-up.
