AMDA Names Christopher Laxton as Executive Director

Columbia, MD – After a nearly year-long search process, AMDA—Dedicated to Long Term Care Medicine (AMDA) has named Christopher E. Laxton, Certified Association Executive (CAE), as Executive Director. Mr. Laxton has 30 years of experience in non-profit association management as a senior or chief executive at health care-related organizations. He will start his new position in early February 2013.

“We interviewed many extremely qualified candidates; and Chris’ experience, innovative ideas, and visionary leadership put him head and shoulders above the rest,” said AMDA President Matt Wayne, MD, CMD. He added, “We are fortunate to have such a passionate, knowledgeable, and savvy professional to guide our organization in this challenging and ever changing health care environment.”

Mr. Laxton comes to AMDA from Chicago-based Life Services Network of Illinois, where he served as President for three years. Before that, he was Interim Chief Operating Officer at the Society for Biomolecular Sciences. He has served as CEO for a number of health care-related associations, including the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

From 2008 to 2012, Mr. Laxton has been appointed as an examiner for the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program, which recognizes health care and other organizations for performance excellence. This past year he was a senior examiner for the award program. A widely published author, Mr. Laxton’s articles have appeared in the American Journal of Infection Control, Caring People magazine, FORUM magazine, and other publications.

Over the years, Mr. Laxton has gained a reputation as a speaker and presenter on various topics. He has delivered lectures and workshops on strategic planning, governance, and decision making, as well as the role of professional and trade associations. A graduate of McGill University, Mr. Laxton earned his Certificate of Association Executive (CAE) credential from the American Society of Association Professionals.

Harvey Tillipman has served as AMDA’s Interim Executive Director since January of this year and will continue in this role until March 2013. An independent management consultant affiliated with Transition Management Consulting, Inc., Mr. Tillipman worked with a special committee led by AMDA Immediate Past-President Karyn Leible, MD, RN, CMD, and Dr. Wayne, on the executive director search.
