AMDA Holding EDGE Virtual Symposium August 27
Controversial Topics to be Discussed
Registration is now open for EDGE21, AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine’s virtual symposium that is being held August 27, 2021. It will provide the opportunity to discuss and debate controversial topics in the post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) setting. The goal is to push attendees out of their comfort zone and open dialogue around topics that aren’t always discussed.
“We want to address controversial topics –ones that don’t normally get this kind of attention –with real dialogue,” says Diane Sanders-Cepeda, DO, CMD, chair of AMDA’s Online Education Subcommittee. “We even have scheduled a debate as part of the symposium, and I’m really excited about that. We will get audience participation and a rebuttal with each group. I geek out when I think about the topics and the people we have lined up to speak about them.”
Indeed, the symposium agenda is packed. Among the topics are alternative medicine use, boundaries of autonomy and informed consent, non-violent communication, psychological medication prescribing and deprescribing, systemic societal ageism, stopping eating and drinking by advance directive, racism and unconscious bias, provider-assisted dying, and more. It isn’t surprising that AMDA is on the forefront of these issues, as the organization and its members have long been agents of change. “I am grateful to be in an organization that has embraced the hard topics and is forward thinking. I feel like we are answering a call to change and to be leaders against systemic racism, disparities, and ageism, and to push for equality for all,” Dr. Sanders-Cepeda notes. “What is called for is service; and AMDA recognizes that we need to lend our voice in a different and more powerful way. We need to get before national leaders and have these conversations.”
Looking back on the past year and the pandemic, Dr. Sanders-Cepeda said, “This moment requires us to think back on the people we’ve lost to COVID-19. If I don’t keep working and moving forward, I dishonor their legacy. Let this be part of the reason we all seek to improve and evolve.”
