AMDA’s Foundation Recognizes Top Leaders: Visionaries Crecelius, Smith, and Pandya Given Highest Honors
During the AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA) annual conference in Atlanta, GA, the Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, an affiliate of AMDA, announced the recipients of its three highest achievement awards: Medical Director of the Year, the William Dodd Founder’s Award, and the James Pattee Award for Excellence in Education.
Charles Crecelius, MD, PhD, CMD, is the 2019 Medical Director of the Year. Established in 2007, this annual award recognizes a PALTC facility medical director whose vision, passion, leadership, and commitment succeed in taking patient care to exceptional levels of quality, excellence, and innovation. In addition to a 20-year tenure as medical director at Delmar Gardens, a Missouri-based skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, Dr. Crecelius is associate clinical professor of medicine and geriatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, where he shares his knowledge and passion with fellows. Dr. Crecelius also works with the BJC Accountable Care Organization in St. Louis as medical director, post-acute care services.
Elsewhere, Dr. Crecelius recently helped establish the PAC/LTC Consortium—a collaborative effort among post-acute care representatives from local hospitals and accountable care organizations, representatives from local skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities, and other stakeholders—that provides a forum for professionals across the care continuum to share views and develop universal clinical care pathways.
“My ultimate boss is my patient,” says Dr. Crecelius, and that drives him to tirelessly serve them daily. “We have people in post-acute and long-term care who care about patients with extraordinary compassion. The older I get, the more choked up I get when I see random acts of kindness every day.”
Dr. Crecelius is past-president of the Society and the Missouri Association of Long-Term Care Physicians. He has chaired and served on numerous committees, and he is a frequent and popular speaker on legislative and regulatory issues, as well as other topics, at the Society’s annual conferences and other national and regional meetings.
A graduate of Carleton College in Minnesota, Dr. Crecelius received a PhD in Biochemistry and his MD from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Over the years, he has received numerous awards, including the Society’s prestigious William Dodd Founder’s Award for Distinguished Service.
David Smith, MD, CMD, president of Geriatric Consultants of Central Texas and medical director of several facilities in the region, received the William Dodd Founder’s Award. This award, named for the organization’s founder, honors an AMDA leader and visionary each year for a lifetime of service.
An AMDA member since 1981, Dr. Smith served as its president and continues to be active with the organization’s non-profit foundation. He is co-chair of the foundation’s corporate giving campaign, which identifies prospective corporate contributors and optimizes outreach to those companies. Dr. Smith also serves on the editorial advisory board for JAMDA, AMDA’s peer-reviewed journal. He has won numerous honors over the years, including the Pattee Award, and he is a widely published author.
Naushira Pandya, MD, CMD, is the recipient of the James Pattee Award. Named for the physician considered the “father” of AMDA’s Certified Medical Director (CMD) curriculum and certification program, this award honors a practitioner who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to and passion for education throughout his or her career.
Dr. Pandya is professor and chair of the Geriatrics Department at Nova Southeastern University’s Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, project director of the Geriatrics Education Center, director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program, and a Fulbright Senior Specialist Scholar. She also is director of the college’s Life-Long Learning Center. Additionally, she has served as medical director of several nursing facilities. Dr. Pandya is a past-president of the Society and served as chair of the Clinical Practice Committee and Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee.
