AMDA’s Foundation Recognizes Top Leaders, Visionaries
The Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, an affiliate of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care (PALTC) Medicine, has announced the recipients of its three highest achievement awards: Medical Director of the Year, the William Dodd Founder’s Award for Distinguished Service, and the James Pattee Award for Excellence in Education.
Fred Feinsod, MD, MPH, DSc, CMD, FACP, is the 2020 Medical Director of the Year. Established in 2007, this annual award recognizes a PALTC facility medical director whose vision, passion, leadership, and commitment succeed in taking patient care to exceptional levels of quality, excellence, and innovation. Dr. Feinsod is a multi-facility medical director and attending physician in Colorado. He serves hundreds of nursing home residents throughout the state, and he travels many miles every week to provide quality care. His efforts also help the practitioners and other interdisciplinary team members in those facilities, who often don’t have access to key resources.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dr. Feinsod received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He also has a Doctor of Science and Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Over the years, he has been a dedicated AMDA volunteer leader, serving on the Board of Directors and on the JAMDA Editorial Advisory Board. He also was chair of the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM) Board.
“Winning this award is a tremendous honor beyond words,” said Dr. Feinsod. “I love what I’m doing. I have wonderful colleagues, and together we provide services that wouldn’t otherwise be available to a lot of people.”
Keith Rapp, MD, CMD, FAAFP, is the 2020 recipient of the William Dodd Founder’s Award for Distinguished Service, named for the visionary physician who first envisioned AMDA back in the 1970s. This award recognizes significant contributions by those individuals who build the organizational strength, image, and mission of AMDA.
Dr. Rapp is an innovator who started one of the first and largest medical practices in the country that focused exclusively on long-term care. Along with his wife, Mary Pat, a nurse practitioner, the practice evolved and grew into one providing medical care and medical director services throughout Texas. It was honored four times by the Houston Chronical as a top workplace.
Dr. Rapp was AMDA president from 2001 to 2002 and program director of the Society’s first comprehensive course on medical direction. He also was secretary and vice president. He currently serves on the Foundation’s Development Committee. He has written articles and has been a popular speaker at many AMDA and other national and regional conferences. Additionally, he is active on the state level and is a past-president of the Texas Medical Directors Association.
Robert Kaplan, MD, FACP, CMD, is the recipient of the 2020 James Pattee Award for Excellence in Education. Named for the physician considered the “father” of AMDA’s Certified Medical Director (CMD) curriculum and certification program, this award honors a practitioner who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to and passion for education throughout his or her career.
Dr. Kaplan, who has served as a multi-facility medical director and attending physician, is passionate about PALTC practice. However, early in his career he wondered if he should have pursued academia because he loved teaching so much. He believes that a strong education program is the foundation of any truly successful clinical model. He brings education and clinical practice together to benefit his facility residents and inspire physicians and other practitioners.
Becoming a member of AMDA and obtaining his CMD were important milestones for Dr. Kaplan. He was a Core Curriculum faculty member for 13 years, with a stint as chair. He is the immediate past chair of the ABPLM. He has participated on several AMDA committees, including the Education Committee and the Annual Conference Planning Subcommittee. For many years, he’s also served in the AMDA House of Delegates. He is a past president of the Florida Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, having also previously served as a long-term member and chair of their Education Committee.
